UPWHA is a proud member

of "Alliance to End Soring"

We of the UPWHA, believe in the Naturally Gaited Horse.  We believe in the inherent beauty of fluid and balanced movement for all horses, with NO artificial or mechanical influences to detract from the poetry of a naturally athletic horse.  We believe that purity of gait must be paramount.  It is because of these beliefs that we limit the shoeing and toe lengths that are allowed on our member horses, and in the UPWHA classes sponsored for our members at affiliated shows.  Our mission is to promote the foundation gait of the natural walking horse; to reclaim his place as THE premier pleasure horse and in recognition of his historical contributions to our culture.

We invite like-minded individuals to join us in our endeavors; those who also value their horse's un-enhanced, natural abilities; who recognize that shoeing should never be a gait enhancer but solely for the preservation of hoof soundness.  That natural talent is not determined by the farrier, but by training and God-given abilities of a horse, helped along by the honest sweat of the rider.

The UPWHA membership is open and welcoming to all like-minded individuals who agree and support our philosophies regarding the sound training. exhibition and promotion of the Pleasure Tennessee Walking Horse.  We welcome and encourage active participation and support in our efforts to promote sound and naturally gaited horses

  • Toe lengths of horses hooves are restricted to 4 1/2 inches in length, as measured along the anterior hoof wall to the ground, to include the shoe.

  • UPWHA shoeing maximum:  Members of UPWHA agree that no UPWHA horses will be exhibited in weighted shoes.   Horses should be in shoes weighing no more than a traditional manufactured keg shoe, a.k.a. trail shoe, of comparable size.  (See IJA rules regarding exceptions for therapeutic shoeing)
